Don't generalize too much, Liz. It's not entirely accurate to say that Washington bars are for the better - rather you should say that the WA smoke-free law is affecting Olympia bars for the better.
Having lived in rural Washington state for four years while I was in the Navy, I can assure you that Olympia is not representative of Washington state. Much like Madison, Olympia (and Seattle) are anomalies. In small town Washington - especially Eastern Washington - I would be willing to bet that it's a much different picture.
This is STATEWIDE data compiled by the Washington State Department of Revenue, which is based in the state's capital, Olympia. There are bars all over Washington, and they're all included in the data.
I love this post Liz! I know that I would not go out here in Seattle if people were smoking in the bars and as far as I can tell, thats a popular opinion! Go Washington!
I grew up in Northern Idaho/Eastern Washington and would argue the other way from Ryan - even though it's "small town" many educated, upper middle class people don't go out to bars because they don't want to smell like an ashtray when they get home. Having smoke free restaurants and bars (in Washington, sadly it's only restaurants in Idaho) makes it much more appealing to out, especially in the smaller towns where you might only have one or two bars available.
